Child Falls Through Subway Grate At Brooklyn Playground

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An 11-year-old fell through an open subway grate in a Brooklyn park Wednesday.

It happened around 5 p.m. at the Rudd Playground in Bushwick.

Police say the boy dropped onto a subway platform after falling through a grate that had been accidentally left open.

He did not land on the tracks and was rescued by relatives and good Samaritans. He was not seriously injured.

"No one knew how deep it was. You look and it's like a black hole. No one knew how deep it was. No one knew if he was laying on the tracks, if a train was gonna start rolling through, so it was so many things going through your head at one time," Brooklyn resident Parker Griffin said.

It's believed the boy slipped into the gated-off area through a section of peeled-back fence.

A complaint about the fencing was reportedly submitted to the city two hours before the accident.
