Central Park Underwear Run Kicks Off Triathlon Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Runners are a common sight in Central Park, but usually, they are wearing more clothes than they were on Friday.

Robert Burck, the legendary Naked Cowboy, served as the grand marshal as about 500 triathletes participated in the annual Underwear Run on Friday.

The 1.7-mile fun run kicked off New York City Triathlon weekend.

The run did not involve such formalities as transitions and timing chips – just strangers running in their underwear, in what the Triathlon quipped was just "another typical summer evening in New York City."

The actual Triathlon comes on Sunday, and more than 4,000 athletes will compete.
