Central Park Goes Pink For Annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Thousands of runners laced up to race for the cure in Manhattan Sunday.

As CBS2's Jessica Moore reported, the annual Susan G. Komen greater NYC race kicked off at 9 a.m. in Central Park.

Breast cancer survivors, family and friends all joined together to conquer the disease.

CBS2 and TV 10/55 are proud sponsors of the event. Taking part this year were Alice Gainer, John Elliott, Cindy Hsu, and Alex Denis. Also there was the race founder, Susan G. Komen's sister Nancy Brinker.

"Today, there are more options than ever for women, but we still have a lot to do," Brinker said. "And my heart hurts for all the women and men who haven't been able to access to them."

Many breast cancer survivors shared their personal battles with the disease.

"Relatives and friends really don't understand what's going on with someone who's experiencing chemo," said Shirley Brooks.

"When he was 8 days old, I started chemo, and it was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life," another woman said. "I am now officially cancer free, with a healthy, perfect baby boy."
