Police: 'Common Substances Found' In Explosive Device That Cost Teen Part Of Leg In Central Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD said Thursday that it has identified "traces of common substances" in an explosive device that cost a young man part of his leg in Central Park.

Police said the common substances can be found at local hardware stores and could create an explosion when combined.

Police said there was no trigger or electrical components involved in the explosion on Sunday, July 3, just the chemicals.

Connor Golden, a Virginia college student who was about to turn 19 at the time, lost his left leg below the knee after jumping off a rock and stepping onto some sort of improvised explosive device.

The NYPD Bomb Squad said it appeared to be the work of a hobbyist, but they're still unclear of who left it there.

Golden's family released a statement last week saying: "We and our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the many individuals and institutions that have expressed concern for him and provided invaluable assistance and support since this tragedy."
