CBS 2 Gets Results: Crews Kickoff $11.2-Million Palisades Parkway Facelift

FORT LEE, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- Road renovations were underway on the Palisades Parkway, on Monday night. The DOT took action following a CBS 2 report on the pothole ridden road over the winter.

As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, it has been 18 years since the New Jersey side of the Palisades Parkway was paved, and drivers have been fed up with the makeshift repairs.

"They do two potholes here and they leave out eight potholes there. It's ridiculous," one motorist commented.

The parkway and the cars that drive on it took a beating during this year's brutal winter.

"We've had to have alignments on this vehicle many times," Jerrold Miles said.

Crews began repaving an 11 mile stretch of the northbound lanes starting at the George Washington Bridge. Once that is complete they will begin work on the southbound lanes. Drivers should be prepared for delays.

"Motorists can expect single lane closures to start with overnight work. It's going to start at 8:30 each night, Monday to Friday, and be complete by 5:30 the next morning," DOT spokesman Stephen Schapiro said, "Friday night it will be complete the next morning by 8 a.m. also during the project there will be some daytime closures."

The parkway is maintained by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, but the New Jersey Department of Transportation has taken control of the $11.2-million project. The move came after CBS 2 called on the state's top transportation official to take swift action to fix the parkway.

"It's worse than some third world countries that I've been to, that I shall not name, but I could not believe there was a highway in New Jersey as bad as it was," NJ Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said.

That story got results.
