CBS 2 Exclusive: Staten Island Woman Afraid To Go Home After Being Hit By Stray Bullet

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Staten Island woman is too scared to return outside, after she was shot and wounded by a stray bullet Wednesday afternoon.

CBS 2's Dave Carlin spoke exclusively to the victim, Denise Taylor, from her hospital bed.

Just before being wheeled in to surgery, Taylor took time to talk on the phone with CBS 2 about her brush with death.

"The bullet is still inside of me," she said.

The bullet was lodged in her leg after leaving a hole in the front door of her apartment

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the West Brighton Houses on Henderson Avenue, while the woman was enjoying time with her family.

"I was in my house listening to music with my daughters," Taylor said.

She said she heard a noise, and spied through the peephole in the door to see two men in the hallway fighting near the elevator.

"I don't even know these people," she said.

Then came the gunfire.

"And a bullet shoots in my door and hit me in my leg," Taylor said.

Taylor told Carlin she was concerned about the surgery she had to undergo, but there is something she is even more worried about -- returning to that building and a home where she does not feel safe.

"I can't go back to that apartment," she said.

Neighbors were shocked by the incident.

"That's not right. That isn't right," said neighbor Tiana Camacho. "Nobody should be shot in her own home."

As police searched for the gunman and the other man, Taylor pleaded for an end to the violence.

"They need to stop shooting," she said.
