Cat Survives 12-Story Plunge At Manhattan Apartment Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One cat is lucky to be alive after falling 12-stories at a Manhattan apartment building earlier this week.

Owner Samuel Jacobs said he panicked when he returned to his 15th floor apartment on East 32nd Street Tuesday and couldn't find his 6-year-old cat Gizmo.

Jacobs frantically searched his home, before looking over the patio railing and seeing Gizmo on the third-floor overhang.

"I didn't know if he was alive. I didn't know if he was dead. I thought he was dead," Jacobs told CBS 2's Scott Rapoport.

With help from a building porter, Jacobs climbed out onto the overhang and was happily shocked to find Gizmo purring.

"He looked so relieved to see me," Jacobs said. "He was scared and just crying and screaming."

Jacobs grabbed Gizmo and rushed him to the vet.

It turns out the cat suffered only minor injuries, including a chipped tooth.

"He's the luckiest cat ever," Jacobs told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond.

"Unbelievable, I thought he was at least gonna have broken body parts, broken legs," he told Rapoport.
