More Than 80 Cars Catch Fire At Lot In Carteret, NJ

CARTERET, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of cars caught fire early Tuesday morning at a lot in Carteret.

Firefighters were battling a massive blaze involving 82 vehicles in the gated lot at Insurance Auto Auctions, officials told CBS2's Scott Rapoport.

Jim Rossi, the manager of the business, said he was trying to make sense of it all.

"We're not sure what exactly happened," he said.

Firefighters say the blaze broke out shortly after 2 a.m. at the business, which takes in and auctions off damaged cars.

As of noon, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. The fire chief could not yet say whether it was suspicious.

Firefighters described the damage to the vehicles as "considerable." Rossi said there were no injuries.
