NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A student is recovering and a teenager is in custody after a slashing at a high school in Queens Tuesday morning.

It happened at 8:50 a.m. inside Cardozo High School in Bayside, where police say a male 11th grader was slashed in the head. The student was taken to North Shore-LIJ University Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

"The safety of students and staff is our top priority, and NYPD and EMS immediately responded to a serious incident at Cardozo High School this morning where a student was transported to the hospital in stable condition," a Department of Education spokesperson said in a statement. "We are working with NYPD as they conduct an investigation, and are taking additional safety measures at the school."

The school was placed on lockdown while authorities searched for the suspect. Sources tell CBS2 a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody a short while later in connection to the slashing.

The Teamsters Union told CBS2 there is no screening process at the school and that the student was attacked in the stairwell.
