Cops: 4-Year-Old In Serious Condition After Car Strikes Tree In Bethpage

BETHPAGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 4-year-old boy is in serious condition after police say the car he was riding in veered off the road and hit a tree on Long Island.

The boy's grandfather was behind the wheel of a 2008 Nissan Altima on Monday afternoon when he lost control of the car, careened over sidewalk and slammed into a tree off Stewart Avenue and Arthur Avenue in Bethpage, police said.

The boy, who was strapped into his child seat, and the 65-year-old grandfather were taken to a hospital. Police say both suffered head injuries. The grandfather's injuries were not life-threatening.

Their names were not immediately released.

Police say there was no apparent criminality and results of field and blood tests did not show any sign of alcohol or drug impairment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
