One Dead, Two Critical After Elderly Driver Jumps Curb While Parking

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Several pedestrians were struck by an out of control vehicle in Chinatown Monday night.

According to police, seven people were hit by a minivan trying to parallel park when the driver reportedly lost control.

Authorities tell CBS2's Ali Bauman that one of the victims, an adult man, was killed. Two other victims have been listed in critical condition.

First responders say the other injuries were minor, however two patients are listed in serious condition.

The driver was reportedly a 70-year-old man trying to park his van near Canal Street, between Allen and Forsyth Streets, when the vehicle sped up while in reverse and jumped the curb. The van then hit a food cart and several pedestrians nearby.

Police sources say the man does not have a criminal record and stayed at the scene. CBS2's Ali Bauman reports that the driver was charged after being taken into custody for questioning.
