Camp Anchor Recreational Facility Named For Counselors Killed In L.I. Car Wreck
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A new recreational facility for the disabled has been dedicated to three young camp counselors who died in a car accident.
It was four years ago that Jamie Malone, Paige Malone and Michael Mulhall were on their way to work at Camp Anchor in Lido Beach, when they were killed in a car wreck.
A new recreation center for the disabled has been opened in their honor.
"Michael told Joel Latini, who was the head of Camp Anchor many years ago that he was going to raise so much money that they were going to name this building after him. I don't think he expected it the way it happened, but it's something I'll never forget," Mulhall's father Niel said.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor, Kate Murray told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that the center allows all 1,600 users to play basketball, perform in plays, and create arts and crafts.
"It's the largest camp of its kind in America that serves the special challenges and needs of its children," she said.
