Cam Newton On Walking Out Of Press Conference: I'm A 'Sore Loser'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBSNewYork) -- Cam Newton explained Tuesday why he acted like such a sore loser by walking out of his post-Super Bowl press conference: because he is a sore loser -- and he's OK with that.

"You show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser," the Carolina Panthers quarterback told reporters as he cleaned out his locker in Charlotte.

Wearing a hood over his head, Newton sulked while answering reporters' questions, mostly with one-word answers, after the Panthers lost to the Denver Broncos 24-10 in Super Bowl 50. After about three minutes, he stood up and walked out.

Newton said Tuesday if he offended anyone, "that's cool" and that he wouldn't back down from showing his emotions.

"I don't have to conform to anybody's wants for me. I'm not that guy," Newton said. "This is a great league with or without me. I am my own person."

As CBS2's Otis Livingston reported, Newton was forthright about his feelings after losing the biggest game of his life.

"At the end of the day, when you invest so much time and sacrifice so much and things don't go as planned, the emotions take over. That's what happens. As far as trying to be like this person, trying to be like that person ... the truth of the matter is I'm not trying to be like this person."

Newton was also asked why he didn't attempt to dive on his own fumble in the final minutes of the game. The Broncos recovered the loose ball, leading to a C.J. Anderson touchdown run that put the game out of reach.

Newton said he would have risked injury by diving because he would have had to twist his leg in an awkward direction.

"We didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that," he said.
