Police Arrest Cab Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police say they have made an arrest after a Bronx woman was fatally struck by a taxi and the taxi kept going.

The accident happened shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on First Avenue near East 16th Street near Stuyvesant Town.

The woman was lying in the roadway when she was hit by a yellow cab, police said. She has been identified as Kenya Flores, 44. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead

It's not clear what she was doing on the pavement.

John Bangura, 68, was later arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, police said.

Irene, who works in the Starbucks across the street from the accident scene, told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern she wasn't surprised an arrest was made.

"They (police) definitely came in here yesterday, and I saw them looking at everyone's cameras yesterday," she said. "So I'm not that shocked."

"There's no excuse for hit-and-run in this day and age, to say that least," a man who was relieved to hear about the arrest told Stern. "And not being able to find him would just be unacceptable."
