Bus Strikes Pedestrian In Greenwich Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A pedestrian was hit by a tour bus in Greenwich Village Friday afternoon.

The accident happened at Sixth Avenue and West 4th Street just before 1:50 p.m., CBS2 reported.

Police said a 50-year-old male pedestrian was injured and taken to Bellevue Hospital Center in critical condition, but was later upgraded to stable condition.

Police told WCBS 880 the man's leg was pinned under the bus until paramedics rescued him..

The pedestrian was struck while in the crosswalk as the bus was turning left onto Sixth Avenue from West 4th Street, police said.

Shantay Service, who works nearby, stepped into action when she heard what happened.

"I heard my co-worker screaming saying someone was under the bus, and I ran out immediately to rush to the man that was under the bus, and I held his hand," Service said. "While holding his hand, I asked him his name. I asked him to breathe so he could take his mind off of this traumatic experience."

One of the man's sandals was left behind at the scene.

Bus operator Twin American released a statement following the accident.

"We are aware of the accident this afternoon and deeply regret this very unfortunate incident," a Twin America representative said in the statement. "We are fully cooperating with the authorities while this accident is being investigated."

The bus driver remained at the scene.
