Buildings Department Revokes License For Contractor With Over $600,000 In Fines
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City has now permanently revoked the license of a general contractor that owes more than $600,000 in penalties.
As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, the city's Department of Buildings said Brooklyn-based MRMD has the most violations of any general contractor in the city.
The company agreed last year to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars in outstanding fines, but the city said it is now in default.
"We couldn't keep up with it because the entire buildings department staff was targeting each one of our jobs," said owner Robert San Miguel.
When asked why he thought his company was being targeted, Miguel said he believed it was a "quota or vendetta."
Miguel said most of the violations were caused by subcontractors.
"I didn't...put the concrete truck in the middle of the street," he said.
While Miguel said very few had to do with safety, the Department of Buildings said MRMD allowed serious safety violations to exist at its work sites.
The buildings department said work could could be stopped at more than 400 jobs until a new general contractor can be found.
