Brooklyn Officials To Host Town Hall Meetings In Effort To Ease Police-Community Tensions
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brooklyn's borough president is teaming up with a renowned civil rights attorney to find out what the city needs to do to rebuild trust among its communities and the police.
As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, the two men are hosting a series of town hall meetings and student video chats to get the conversation going.
"Some of these conversations are going to be difficult and they're going to have a level of discomfort," said Borough President Eric Adams. "But we're going to lean into our discomfort so we can come out of that discomfort a better city and a better borough."
Adams and attorney Norman Siegel said they're inviting protesters, residents, and off-duty NYPD officers to participate.
"We need to explore together how to improve training for NYPD officers and reduce stereotyping on all sides. On all sides," said Siegel.
The move comes in the wake of protests over the Eric Garner grand jury case on Staten Island and the fatal shooting of two on-duty NYPD officers in Brooklyn.
