Police: Man On Bike Wanted For Snatching Jewelry From Six People In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a man on a bike who they say has been snatching jewelry from people in Brooklyn.

The man has struck six times around Coney Island and Brighten Beach since July 3, police said. In each incident, he approaches a person on a bike, grabs their chain or bracelet and then takes off, police said.

His victims are all men between the ages of 63 and 81, police said. No one was hurt during the robberies.

But people in the neighborhood are watching their backs, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reports.

People who live in the area say police need to patrol the neighborhood more often.

"Obviously, he's targeting people that can't do anything and unfortunately that's when the police step in," resident Ken Williams. "They're here to protect property and life and the combination of both should be a high priority."

"You don't see no cops and I think this guy knows what he's doing," said resident Junior Belez.

Seventy-six-year-old Borina Barskaya walks the Coney Island boardwalk every day, but said she does so with extreme caution.

"It's  not so good area and twice my husband was beat here by teenager," she said.

"Nothing you can do to stop people from robbing other people when they're desperate," another man told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck.

Police have released surveillance images of the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
