Fire Breaks Out In East Flatbush, Brooklyn Junkyard

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire was raging late Wednesday afternoon in a junkyard in Brooklyn.

Huge flames were consuming what appeared to be a mulch pile at Ralph Avenue and Preston Court in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, Joe Biermann reported from Chopper 2.

A couple of cars and a truck were also ablaze.

The smoke was rising about 2,000 feet and was even visible from Lower Manhattan.

The fire had only been raised to the all-hands level as of shortly after 5 p.m.

Due to the smoke, the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene advised people nearby to close their windows while inside and reduce outdoor activity. People with breathing conditions such as asthma were likely to be especially sensitive, the department said.

No injuries were reported in the fire, but the blaze did cause major traffic delays.
