Man Fatally Crushed By Makeshift Elevator In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man was killed while on the job Monday in Brooklyn.

It happened shortly before noon at KP Farm Market on Nostrand Avenue in East Flatbush.

Police said the 62-year-old man was crushed by an illegal, makeshift hoist or elevator.

The Department of Buildings said two workers had been using it to lower food from the first floor to the basement, when one employee was crushed underneath, CBS2's Valerie Castro reported.

"There was a lot of police here, there was the fire department, ambulance. But that was earlier this morning – probably about 10 or 11-o-clock," said one man who was working next door. "I think it's a tragedy. Should have been maybe built to code. I think it's an illegal elevator."

The DOB said it is reviewing surveillance video from cameras inside the store.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
