Brookhaven Officials Hope To Sniff Out Stench Problem

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Once and for all, Brookhaven town officials hope to pinpoint the source of the putrid stench that many believe is coming from a nearby landfill.

Officials will install odor and dust monitors in the area, WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported.

Residents in Brookhaven hamlet have been living with the stink for years. They describe the stench as smelling like gas or mildew and say it gets especially bad during the summer, when they hope to enjoy outdoor barbecues and picnics.

Officials hope to correct the smelly problem once they can identify the source.

One man, however, had advice for those who are complaining: "If you don't want to smell the landfill, don't move by the landfill."
