Police: Young Mother Shot And Killed Inside Her Bronx Apartment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A young mother was found shot to death inside her Bronx apartment early Tuesday morning and now police are searching for her son's father as a possible suspect.

Shoshane Rattigan, 28, was pronounced dead after police said she was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head in her second-floor apartment on Bogart Avenue.

Police said just before 4 a.m., Rattigan was home with her 7-year-old son and 20-year-old nephew in another room. The nephew told police he heard arguing and then a single shot. Seconds later, he found Rattigan dead on the floor.

The little boy's father was seen running from the home and then driving off, investigators said.

Stunned neighbors stood outside on the block watching the police investigation, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"I was shocked," said neighbor Johanna Volpicelli. "I woke up and saw all of these cars."

"It's really close to home," said neighbor Michelle Egan. "It's really, really close to home and it's scary."

Volpicelli said the former couple was often heard arguing.

"He beat her up, she was abused, she was beaten," she said. "Always fighting."

But in public, neighbors said the alleged killer displayed a different image.

"He was nice guy, he would come out and say, 'Hi grandma, good morning grandma,'" Volpicelli said.

"He would walk him to school, pick him up from school, take him to school," said neighbor Antonio Quiles. "She was always working, she was working."

Detectives spent hours collecting evidence at the apartment that the family had called home for only a few months.

"I don't know what to say. My heart pours out for the family," said neighbor Timothy Pryor. "I hope they catch him, I really hope they do."

Sources said that police did come to the home several times for domestic violence calls, but no arrests were ever made, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

Police said the suspect is in his 30s and was seen driving away in a grey or silver Honda Odyssey. They have not released his name.

The little boy was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.

The investigation is ongoing.
