NYPD Searching For Bronx Gunman Who Opened Fire On Man In Car

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man is recovering after being shot in the Bronx and a search is on for the gunman, police said Saturday.

The shooting happened in the Soundview section on East 173rd Street near Manor Avenue around 6 a.m. Friday.

Surveillance footage shows the gunman sneaking up in the dark, aiming and firing at least half a dozen shots into the driver's side window of a parked car. Then the shooter runs.

A 26-year-old man was sitting in that parked car and was shot multiple times.

The dramatic video was jarring for long-time Soundview residents.

"It's scary. It's very scary. I'm glad I didn't hear it because things like that, I stay away from," resident Sonia Rullan said.

For some residents of the nearby Bronx River Houses apartments, the video served as a sobering reminder that many there don't feel safe.

"You know, that's a sad situation, for somebody to get shot like that," a resident named Middy said.

"Is it safe out here?" CBS2's Nick Caloway asked.

"No, I don't feel safe. At all," Middy said. "Due to the crime and stuff like that, you fear for your life, and you don't know what's going to happen."

Crime has spiked sharply since the pandemic, making 2020 a particular violent year in New York.

"It's all over, man. It's rough," one man said.

"It's scary because with everything that's going on, between wearing a mask and all this stuff, there's shootings all over. It's terrible," Rullan said.

The victim of this shooting suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his arm. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where cops say he was last reported to be stable.

The motive of the attack is not yet known and police are still trying to find the shooter.
