Principal Reassigned After Accusations Of Grade-Fixing At Bronx High School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A principal accused of fixing grades at a Bronx school has been reassigned, according the city Department of Education.

Santiago Taveras has been reassigned away from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx, according to the Department of Education.

CBS2 first reported on the investigation last fall, when Taveras was accused of changing failing grades to passing grades without teachers' consent.

For example, a senior who got a "no-show" grade in global history reportedly got it changed to a 75. Another student's 55 in English was reportedly changed to a 90, and a failing algebra grade of 55 was reportedly changed to a passing 65, CBS2 reported in November of last year.

Other grade-fixing scandals, such as that at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, were reported by teachers. In the case of DeWitt Clinton, the city Department of Education discovered the problem itself.

Taveras previously had been a deputy chancellor in the DOE, and his job had been to close failing schools.

The principal reportedly urged teachers to raise their pass rates to 80 percent.

The school is now searching for a new principal.
