Police: 3 Suspects Pretended To Be Cops, Robbed Bronx Apartment Residents

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Monday were searching for three suspects who allegedly pretended to be police officers as they robbed three people in a Bronx building.

Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, the suspects walked into a second-floor residence on Mayflower Avenue in the Bronx, and banged on the door as they claimed to be police officers, the NYPD said.

Upon entering, the suspects handcuffed two people in the apartment – a 36-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man – and took their cellphones, police said.

The suspects then went down to the basement apartment, where they also claimed to be police officers and put the 51-year-old man who lived there in handcuffs, police said.

The suspects then took his cellphone and ran off, police said.

One of the suspects was described as a man with light skin in his early 30s, wearing a police shield around his neck. The other two both described as men with dark skin in their late 30s to early 40s, tall with large builds.

Police have released surveillance video.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
