Police: Man Struck By Train After Being Pushed Onto Subway Tracks In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police released a surveillance picture late Wednesday of the man they say is wanted for pushing another man onto the tracks at a Subway station in the Bronx.

It happened around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday at the 170th Street station in the Mount Eden neighborhood. Police said the 43-year-old man was pushed onto the tracks as a southbound D train was approaching the station.

"All he said was that, 'Somebody pushed me onto the tracks," Transit Police Chief Joseph Fox said.

Fox said the train struck the man on the left leg.

"The train operator was pulling in and saw somebody fly in front of the train," Fox said. "His injury is a severe injury in his leg. He's in the hospital now and we're reviewing video in the station and above."

The victim was taken to Lincoln Hospital in serious but stable condition. The other man, who was seen wearing a green coat, ran off, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"We have a witness that sees a male jump the turnstile, come down into the station and sees the same male five minutes later run up with people yelling, 'That's him, that's him,'" Fox said. "In that time frame, our victim, who was 21-years-old, was pushed onto the tracks."

Service on the B and D subway lines were delayed for a time Wednesday morning as police investigated. Outside the station, yellow tape and an officer prevented people from entering.

"I just came out of my house, I 'm supposed to get on the train. I guess we'll have to hop into a cab now," commuter Jenny Cotto told CBS2's Raegan Medgie.

"This is the subway stop that I take all the time," said rider Blayr Robertson.

"I'm surprised," straphanger Carlos Sanchez said. "It never happened before, here in this station."

It's unclear if the two men knew each other or not or if there was some sort of argument prior to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
