NYPD: 2 Dead In Bronx Double Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are questioning the husband of a woman who was killed in a double shooting that also left a man dead in the Bronx early Monday morning.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Monday, police said 37-year-old Jahaira Duverge and 33-year-old Beramy Garcia were fatally shot in front of a deli on Weeks Avenue near East 175th Street in Mount Hope.

The gunfire erupted hours after the Dominican Parade had ended, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

"I heard multiple gunshots. For a minute I though it was fireworks," resident Linda Boateng said.

Duverge, a mother of four, was shot in the torso and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she later died.

Garcia was shot in the head, back and wrist. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"She's a good woman. She's a good friend. Everybody loves her here," Duverge's friend said.

Police said the shooter was shirtless and opened fire on the victims as they were standing together. A revolver was recovered inside of a Nissan Quest parked near the scene, CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported.

Police said the gun was found inside the wheel well of a dark-colored minivan.

Kendre Perez, Duverge's husband was brought in for questioning by police. He said he told them that he and his wife were leaving a party when they stopped at the deli to pick up some things, but the deli was closed.

Perez said he left his wife there and went to another store up the block that was open 24 hours.

"She waited for me over there," Perez said.

He said when he returned, the scene was utter chaos.

"I saw my wife in the ambulance. I saw people running. I don't know what happened," Perez said.

Perez added he doesn't know who Garcia is.

"I don't know the other guy there."

After hours of questioning by police, he was released. Witnesses and video determined it wasn't him.

The investigation is ongoing.
