Suspect Grabbed By Cops After Jumping Deli Counter, Attacking Clerk In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police chased down a man accused of robbing a Bronx deli on Thursday morning.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, dramatic surveillance video shows the suspect pretending to be a customer before leaping over the counter and attacking the cashier at 20-20 Deli Convenience on East 161st Street and Melrose Ave. He then moved to the register in an attempt to open it.

Abdul Saed was in the store and rushed to get help.

"Outside I called the cops as soon as I saw the cops on the corner they came right away," he said.

Two men flagged down a passing NYPD cruiser. They told the officers what was happening.

As an officer entered the store, words were exchanged and the suspect jumped over the counter, and charged the cop trying to escape.

"He started swinging and swinging to the cops. He hit them a couple times over there. He hit them three or four time. They didn't do anything to harm the guy," one witness said.

The suspect tried to get away, but was stopped by police.

"The guy he didn't give up, he's like out of his mind," Saed said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, charges against him are pending.
