Long Island Catering Hall Agrees To Pay $50K In Overtime Dispute

ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island banquet facility has agreed to pay 19 workers $50,000 to settle claims it failed to pay them overtime for almost six years.

Bridgeview Yacht Club in Nassau County was accused of not adequately tracking the hours of its wait staff and bartenders and failing to pay them overtime.

Authorities say some workers were paid straight time when they worked more than 40 hours and others were given a lump-sum payment that didn't comply with overtime requirements.

"Wage theft is a serious problem facing too many New Yorkers and my office will continue to investigate businesses that fail to properly compensate their employees," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement. "Nothing is more fundamental that getting a fair day's pay for a fair day's work and we will vigorously enforce the laws protecting our most vulnerable workers."

Douglas Wigdor, an attorney for the Island Park facility, says his client is committed to making sure employees are treated fairly, Newsday reported. The company isn't admitting or denying guilt through the settlement.
