Bridgeport Hit-And-Run Victim In Critical Condition

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police in Bridgeport say a 22-year-old man is in critical condition after he was hit by a speeding car whose driver fled the scene.

Police say the victim was crossing the street at the intersection of Park Avenue and Vine Street early Saturday. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police say witnesses report seeing the car accelerating through the intersection as the traffic light changed. The driver applied the brakes after hitting the victim, and then fled the scene.

Police did not release additional information, including the identity of the victim.

In June, a pedestrian pilot flag program was launched at a crosswalk in front of the Margaret Morton Government Center.

The goal was for a pedestrian to pick up a yellow flag before crossing the street, wave it at oncoming traffic to get cars to stop and then leave the flag on the other side after crossing.
