NYPD Detective Brian Moore To Be Honored One Year After Fatal Shooting

NORTH MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New York City police detective who died in the line of duty will be honored during a ceremony on Long Island.

Detective Brian Moore, 25, was shot in the face by an armed suspect during a traffic stop in Queens on May 2, 2015. He died two days later.

He was remembered in New York City on Wednesday -- the anniversary of his death. Moore will also be honored alongside 18 other officers during the department's annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The names of the officers will be added to the memorial wall in the NYPD's Hall of Heroes.

On Long Island, a statue will be unveiled and a school athletic center will be dedicated in North Massapequa on May 21.

NYPD Police Comissioner Bill Bratton posthumously promoted Moore to detective first grade. Moore was the son, nephew and cousin of police officers and the graduate of Plainedge High School, which is in North Massapequa.

Demetrius Blackwell, 35, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in Moore's shooting death. Investigators said Blackwell walked up to Moore's unmarked patrol car and opened fire.

If convicted, Blackwell faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
