Reports: Jets Work Out UCLA QB Brett Hundley, To Sign LB Joe Mays

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brett Hundley worked out for the New York Jets during a private session last month, according to multiple reports.

The UCLA quarterback is considered by some to be the third-best at his position in the upcoming NFL draft. He could be a fit for the Jets with Florida State's Jameis Winston likely out of reach as the presumptive first overall selection and Heisman winner Marcus Mariota potentially off board when Gang Green picks at No. 6.

That said, fans shouldn't expect the athletic Bruins signal-caller to be Mike Maccagnan's inaugural draftee. The rookie general manager has touted his philosophy of taking the best player available, and Hundley isn't projected to be a top-10 or even a first-round pick.

But if the Jets fail to land Mariota, look for Hundley as a possibility with the team picking early in the second (37th overall) and third (70th overall) rounds. The Jets were in a similar position two years ago and drafted Geno Smith at No. 39.

Hundley, 21, completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,155 yards and 22 touchdowns last season at UCLA, and 46 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions over the past two years.

Hundley is also a threat on the ground, rushing 159 times for 644 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2014. Though not as fast as Mariota, the 6-foot-3, 227-pounder ran an impressive 4.63 in the 40-yard dash at February's combine.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said earlier this month that he's hoping to add a fourth quarterback to compete with incumbent starter Smith, veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and third-stringer Matt Simms in training camp.

Hundley has also met with Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Houston, and has a workout scheduled with Arizona, according to NFL.com.

Colorado State's Garrett Grayson and Baylor's Bryce Petty are also in the conversation as the best quarterback prospect behind Winston and Mariota.

JETS EXPECTED TO ADD DEPTH AT LINEBACKER

According to an ESPN report, veteran Joe Mays is expected to sign with New York next week. He would play inside linebacker behind starters David Harris and DeMario Davis.

Mays, 29, has played for four teams during his eight-year career. The 5-foot-11, 245-pound linebacker spent last season with Kansas City, making 20 tackles in eight games, including three starts.
