Williamsburg Boy Tours Precincts To Thank NYPD's 35,000 Police Officers
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A 7-year-old Williamsburg boy, has been inspired to reach out and thank all 35,000 of the city's police officers, precinct by precinct.
As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, Zachary Becerra wants to be the Police Commissioner when he grows up.
"I went to every precinct to thank them for their hard work," he said.
Becerra takes time every Saturday to visit a different precinct. The tradition started after two NYPD officer were killed in the line of duty. He asked his mother if he could give out thank you cars to police officers for their bravery.
"I'm very proud of him. We've been now to fifty-two precincts, seven transits, two housings, and thirteen special teams units," his mother Rosa Ortiz said.
On Thursday, Zachary's role model had a message for him.
"It's a wonderful story, a seven-year-old little fellow who takes the time to go around. I look forward to having him up to my office next week and greeting him," Police Commissioner Bratton said.
"We want him in the class of '31, tell him we are holding a space for him," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Rosa and Zachary have 300 cards printed and ready to give out on Saturday, at the 61st Precinct.
