Boil Order Extended Through Sunday For Parts Of Ossining

UPDATE, 8/3, 8:04 p.m.: The boil advisory has been lifted.

OSSINING, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A boil order has been extended through Sunday for a central section in the village of Ossining in Westchester County.

The order was prompted by a water main break Thursday night on Route 134 near Route 9A, according to the Ossining Water Department.

Under the order, residents must boil all tap water at a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute before drinking it or using it for food preparation, washing dishes by hand, or brushing teeth.

Restaurants, delis, bodegas, and all food service establishments also must boil their water before serving it or using it to prepare food, the department said.

Bottled water may also be used as an alternative

The advisory does not apply to bathing, clothes washing, or the use of dishwashers, the department said.

The village is repairing the water main break and testing the water, Westchester County Assistant Commissioner of Health Peter DeLucia said.

"The village is in the process of doing a repair, and in the process of testing a water, so we're going to make sure that the water is negative for any kind of pathogens so that it is safe to drink," DeLucia told 1010 WINS.

About 5,000 people are affected by the break – extending to Route 9 on the west, Morningside Drive on the east, Hawkes Avenue at Bridle Path Road on the north, and Macy Road at Wolden Road on the south.
