Black History Month: New Jersey Author Tells Her Story In Children's Book

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Sharon Dennis Wyeth has written some 50 books for young people.

She tells her own story in her latest release, a children's picture book titled "The Granddaughter Necklace," published by Scholastic.

"'The Granddaughter Necklace' is really about the women in six to seven generations -- because I include myself and my daughter -- of my family," Wyeth told WCBS 880's Jane Tillman Irving. "The necklace was a device to connect these generations and these stories together, but it did start with a real object."

The female line in Wyeth's family starts with Frances, an indentured servant from County Cork, Ireland who comes to America and marries a free man of color, Irving reported.

Wyeth has done the research and the DNA tests.

The illustrations in the book are of the real people: Wyeth's grandmother, mother, daughter and Wyeth herself.

"The Granddaughter Necklace" is described as "an uplifting tale of love, kinship, and gifts, passed down through generations," according to the publisher's website.

Wyeth, who lives in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, is also a poet and member of the Cave Canem Fellowship for African-American Poets.
