Bill Under Way In New Jersey Would Give Paid Sick Leave To Workers
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A bill is underway in New Jersey that would give mandatory paid sick leave to workers.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, as expected, the bill is getting push back from small businesses. Laurie Ehlbeck, director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, says she's been fielding concerned calls.
"A small employer has a particular amount of money coming in," Ehlbeck said. "So if some type of unfunded mandate is going to cost them more money, it's going to be reflected somewhere else."
Under the bill sponsored by Bergen County State Senator Loretta Weinberg, workers would accumulate an hour of sick time for every 30 worked. New Jersey would be the fourth state to have such a law.
"It's in effect in nine of our communities in New Jersey and the sky has not fallen," Weinberg said.
