Beltran's Elbow Passes Another Test, Vet To Return To Yankees Thursday
TAMPA, Fla. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Carlos Beltran went 1 for 5 in his final extended spring training game and will rejoin the New York Yankees starting lineup on Thursday, manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday.
Beltran, placed on the 15-day disabled list May 15 because of pain related to a bone spur in his right elbow, singled and hit two balls near the right-field fence Wednesday against Toronto minor leaguers.
The eight-time All-Star said the elbow felt fine after his third extended game. He would likely serve as the designated hitter against the Oakland A's on Thursday, Girardi said.
Catcher Francisco Cervelli, on the DL since mid-April because of a strained right hamstring, could start a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Single-A Tampa. He was hitless in five at-bats in his fifth extended spring game Wednesday.
Prior to Wednesday night's game against Oakland that Yankees announced that they had recalled right-hander Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and sent down right-hander Preston Claiborne.
They also designated Alfredo Aceves for for assignment to make room on the 25-man roster for left-hander Wade LeBlanc.
