Crash And Shooting Under Investigation In Belleville, New Jersey

BELLEVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Belleville are investigating an early morning crash and a shooting.

The single-car crash involving a Pontiac happened around 2 a.m. Thursday on South Franklin Avenue and Mill Street.

According to the Essex County's Prosecutor's Office, five men were inside the car and one of them had a gunshot wound to the head. All were taken to area hospitals. The man who was shot is alive and undergoing surgery, authorities said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, authorities said it appears the Pontiac was followed into Belleville from Newark by another vehicle just before the crash and shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
