Man killed, 4-year-old son hurt in Belleville shooting

BELLEVILLE, N.J. -- Police are investigating after a child was injured and a man was killed in a shooting outside an Essex County apartment building Saturday.

Witnesses say that victim was gunned down in a parking lot, then a car was seen speeding away.

Investigators canvassed the scene Saturday night, gathering bags of evidence outside 100 Mill Street in Belleville after police say 37-year-old Francis Medina was shot to death.

The grandmother Medina's children said in Spanish she loves him like he was her own. She says he was with two of his kids when he was killed. One of the children, a 4-year-old, was also shot and rushed to the hospital.

While family members gathered outside the crime scene, the grandmother said she loves her daughter and her children and is praying for them.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force was on scene for hours. Eventually, a truck towed two vehicles from the scene, including a red minivan with the key still in the driver's side door.

At this hour, the motive behind this deadly shooting is still unclear.
