Fugitive Barcelona Van Attack Suspect Shot Dead By Police

BARCELONA, Spain (CBSNewYork) - The man who police believe was behind the wheel in the deadly van attack on pedestrians in Barcelona last week was shot dead Monday.

Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, was shot in the town of Subirats, about 28 miles west of Barcelona.

As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, police said he was shot when he opened his shirt to reveal what looked like explosives. A bomb disposal robot later determined that the device was fake -- a bag full of knives was found with his body.

Abouyaaqoub is believed to have driven the van that killed 13 pedestrians and injured more than 120. He's also suspected of carjacking a man and stabbing him to death while fleeing.

Abouyaaqoub was the target of an international manhunt following the attack, and police say he was part of a 12 man terror cell.

Four people were under arrest and eight were dead including Abouyaaquoub, and five were shot by police after a second van attack left one person dead.

Two other suspects were killed the night before the Las Ramblas van attack in a botched bomb making operation.

"Our message is, we have to stay together and with against this abominable scourge of terrorism. We are all involved in this so we have to cooperate very forcefully," Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis said, "We have to be aware that this is something being carried against any country that cherishes its freedom. It's not something directed against a particular country, targeted not a particular religion. We have to stay together and fight together."

Nine people remain in critical condition following the Barcelona attack. Authorities believe a more elaborate attack was being planned.
