NEW YORK (WCBS 880 ) -- Former WCBS reporter Fred Fishkin found a unique way to humanize the Gulf War.

"I got a call at home saying, 'It looks like the war is going to start tonight,'" he recalls.

Fishkin contacted local families with service members and watched the situation unfold with them.

"As I nervously watched the bombs start falling, I was watching with the families at the time and talking to them and bringing that to our listeners," he says. "Being there with the families helped bring it home for everyone."
