6-Week-Old Found In Shoe Box On LI Porch Doing Well, Authorities Say

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's praise today for a family that saved a 6-week-old baby that was abandoned on Long Island.

Police said Franklin Ulloa, of Brentwood, heard a baby crying and went outside to find the girl in a shoe box, wrapped in a blanket with a bottle of milk last Thursday night.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini says the infant is doing just fine and is under the care of child protective services.

"They did exactly the right thing -- getting the baby to safety and calling 911," Sini told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs. "That's precisely what we want people to do."

An investigation into who abandoned the child is ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352.
