Family Of Avonte Oquendo Agrees To $2.7-Million Settlement With City In Teen's Death
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A settlement has been reached in the death of Avonte Oquendo, the autistic teen who slipped out of a public school in Queens.
Oquendo's family agreed to a $2.7-million payout from the city, CBS2 reported.
In October 2013, the 14-year-old vanished from the Riverview School in Long Island City.
Surveillance video showed him walking out of the building. His body was found on a beach in College Point, Queens three months later.
"The loss of a child is a tragedy no family should endure, and hopefully the resolution of this legal matter will bring some measure of solace to Avonte's family. The DOE has taken a number of steps and is dedicated to taking every measure possible to prevent something like this from occurring again," the Law Department said in a statement.
