Authorities: Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Police Car In East Islip

EAST ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man has died after being hit by a police car Saturday night in East Islip, authorities said

Craig Shiffer, 54, of East Meadow, was struck just after 10:30 p.m. on Main Street by a vehicle responding to a 911 call, WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported.

Shiffer was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was later pronounced dead, the Suffolk County Police Department's Kerry Monaco said.

The police vehicle, which was occupied by two officers, was impounded for a safety check, and the investigation is ongoing, Monaco said.

The cops were not injured.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
