Authorities Investigating Twitter Troll For Threats Against Islanders' Leddy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Islanders say that authorities are investigating a series of hostile tweets directed at defenseman Nick Leddy.

The Nassau County Police Department and FBI were notified on Tuesday after a Twitter user "made violent threats" and posted a photo of Leddy's driver's license, Newsday reported. Other tweets included a photo of his MasterCard and "images of an unidentified woman posing with Leddy, with derogatory words written over her face and body," according to Yahoo Sports.

"We alerted local and federal authorities immediately, as well as the NHL," an Islanders spokesperson told Newsday. "They're investigating the matter. Nick and his family are safe."

The account -- which has been suspended -- was targeting Leddy for months prior to Tuesday's escalation and it's unclear whether the user was identified, the newspaper reported.

Leddy was acquired from Chicago in October. He signed a long-term extension to stay with the Islanders last month.

The 24-year-old Minnesotan played over 26 minutes in Tuesday night's loss to his hometown Wild.
