Authorities Disrupt Suspicious Device In Linden

LINDEN, NJ (CBSNewYork) -- Police responded to reports of a suspicious package on the 1100 block of West St George Avenue in Linden around 6:00 pm.

Officers located the package near a phone booth outside a convenience store and immediately began clearing the area, evacuating the residents of two nearby apartment buildings.

In addition, West St George Avenue was closed between North Stiles Street and Ross Street.

Authorities say the device -- which looked like a bomb according to Linden Mayor Derek Armstead -- was disrupted by the Union County Bomb Squad just before 9:30 pm.

Evacuated residents were escorted back into their residences around 10:30 pm as local authorities and the FBI continue to investigate.
