Audit: NYCHA Failed To Hire Public Housing Residents For Sandy Repairs
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An audit by City Comptroller Scott Stringer found the New York City Housing Authority failed to ensure that contractors working on repairs hire a certain percentage of public housing residents, as required by federal law, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.
"In six contracts, NYCHA residents lost out on over $184,000 in potential wages," Stringer said.
The findings were presented to NYCHA, but Stringer said, "They rejected the notion that they needed to improve. They did not believe they had a problem."
City Councilman Mark Treyger represents Coney Island, where several public housing projects were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
"This report is very concerning to me because I want the impacted residents to be able to do the work in their impacted buildings," he said.
The City Council has vowed to hold public hearings to get answers and hold NYCHA accountable.
