Assemblyman To Distribute Plastic Holders For 'Flimsy' Muni Meter Receipts

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) has partnered with the city Department of Transportation for an effort to distribute receipt holders for those who park using Muni meters.

Hikind and DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg have responded to complaints that the Muni meter receipts are flimsy, and can flip over due to a mere gust of air when a car door slams shut.

"Everybody who drives a car knows that these receipts are flimsy, and not reliable to stay on your dashboard, so this is something that just makes a lot of sense," Hikind told 1010 WINS.

If the receipt ends up flipped over, the driver can end up getting a parking ticket, Hikind pointed out.

"If you have a car and you use a Muni meter, which everybody does, this will save people a ton of money and less arguments with the Department (of Finance), you know, 'I had a thing, but it fell down,'" Hikind said.

Hikind said in a news release that his office has been flooded with complaints about flimsy Muni meter receipts. One member of his own staff had a receipt blowing over and got a $35 ticket for a violation termed, "Muni meter receipt faced down," he said in the release.

Presenting the actual receipt will get a ticket dismissed, but the process is time-consuming and frustrating, Hikind said. He said he initially asked the Department of Transportation to increase the thickness of the receipts, but that proved too expensive.

But Trottenberg recognized the problem, and Hikind's office is now distributing receipt holders provided by the DOT, the assemblyman said.

Hikind said people can pick up the plastic sleeve holders at his office, or call his office at (718) 853-9616 to get one free of charge.
