Art History Expert Daniel H. Weiss To Take Over As Met Museum President

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Daniel H. Weiss, an art historian who is currently president of Haverford College in Pennsylvania, will soon take over as president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The museum announced Tuesday that Weiss is to succeed Emily Kernan Rafferty, who will retire from the Met on March 31 after 10 years in the post.

Weiss was formally elected to the museum presidency at a board of trustees meeting after a national search. He will assume his new post this summer after the current semester ends at Haverford.

Museum Chairman Daniel Brodsky called Weiss an accomplished, creative, and energetic leader with a proven record in managing areas essential to running large institutions.

Weiss spent more than a decade at the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, where he was chair of the art history department from 1998 to 2001 and dean of the faculty in 2001 and 2002.

Weiss will serve as the museum's chief operating officer, responsible for all day-to-day operations. He'll oversee 1,500 employees and report to director and chief executive officer Thomas Campbell.
