RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The trial began Wednesday for a Long Island man accused in two separate killings.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, loved ones of the two victims packed the Suffolk County courtroom, some with tears in their eyes as opening statements began at the trial of Reginald Ross of Yaphank.

Construction flagman Raymond Hirt was shot to death in Ronkonkoma on May 24, 2010. Authorities allege Ross stalked the victim for more than a week and then killed him after complaining about being delayed in traffic.

Prosecutors said Ross believed Hirt disrespected him by making him wait too long at a construction site.

"He was a wonderful, wonderful man," Hirt's fiancé told Hall. "That morning, waved goodbye and blew kisses, never would I have thought I wouldn't see him come home."

The second victim, John Williams, was shot to death in Holbrook five months later. The prosecutor alleges that killing was over a disputed drug deal involving not Williams, but a friend of his.

Ross' attorney said his client was not involved in either of the killings and that prosecutors have the wrong person.

The DA identifies Ross as a member of the Crips street gang.

He has pleaded not guilty.
